Update on Aetna Negotiations with SBUMC

As reported in a
previous eALERT, Aetna has been in negotiations with Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC) to extend their current network contract. Unfortunately, after extended negotiations, SBUMC and Aetna announced that effective Tuesday, February 16, 2010, SBUMC is no longer an in-network provider for Aetna member services. The exact details of the negotiations have not yet been revealed.

Patients who were admitted to SBUMC before the contract expired are still covered under in-network benefits as well as outpatients who have already begun a continuing course of treatment. Additionally, some cancer and obstetric patients under a transitional care provision of the contract will still be covered.

Patients who are Aetna members and use SBUMC for healthcare services should contact their employer’s health plan benefits administrator to determine what benefits are allowed under their specific health plan. If an Aetna member’s contract has an out-of-network benefit, SBUMC services may still be available.

Aetna is requesting that members with questions refer to the letter they sent on January 15th or call member services at the number on their Aetna ID card for assistance.

SBUMC and Aetna plan to continue their negotiations as part of a good faith effort to develop a new contract. C&B is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to keep you updated on further developments. If you have any questions, please contact us.
